Terry Chitaroni Named Marathon's

Volunteer of the year!

Media Release-

The Eagles Program is extremely pleased for Captain Ben Gamache, defensemen Kyle Breukleman and Giiwedin Kakegabon.  Ben Gamache has been invited to attend the Soo Greyhounds spring camp.  Gamache who led the Eagles in scoring last season, demonstrated throughout the season he deserved a Major Junior tryout.  "I am so happy for Ben, his work ethic and dedication to the game is next to none.  He truly deserves this chance" says Coach Chitaroni.  Gamache will be attending the camp on May 31 and June 1.  Good luck Ben

Kyle Breukleman also had an impressive season.  Breukleman was unsure whether he should attend and eventually play for the Eagles Program last August.  The decision was made, and Breukleman never looked back.  This decision has paid off for Breukleman, he also has been invited to a major junior camp, the London Knights.  "Kyle is a gifted defenseman who can crush you with one of his punishing hits. He is a treat to coach and has a great attitude toward the game." says Coach Chitaroni.  Good Luck Kyle

Giiwedin Kakegabon attended the Portage Terriers spring camp and was asked to sign before the camp ended.  Portage was one of the top Junior teams in Canada last year.  Kakegabon spent two years with the Eagles Program.  "Giiweden improved a great deal in two years in our Program.  He comes to play every night and that effort has now paid off for him" says Coach Chitaroni  Good Luck next year Cece.

Chitaroni was asked why these kids were not given these opportunities with other programs and are now getting the chance with the Eagles.  Chitaroni replied" I don't make promises I can't deliver, I tell the kids, I can only promise you one thing, you come here you WILL improve" . The improvement of these players is evident as 5 players who were not drafted at fifteen, received major junior tryouts in the last two years with the Eagles.  Chitaroni is also pleased that everyone of his players has received tryouts from all over.  "I don't think there was one player who didn't get invited to a Junior camp, players will be attending camps in Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan."  Chitaroni stated approximately 12 of his players will be returning for what he called "unfinished business".  The Eagles tied the eventual National Champs(Sudbury Wolves) and lost a hard fought battle against the National silver medalist(Winnipeg Thrashers) last season.

Superior Eagles Greg Trichilo drafted by Sudbury Wolves in 7th Round

I am extremely pleased for Greg being the first ever Eagles player drafted to the Ontario Hockey League.  Throughout the year, Greg improved because of his hard work and dedication.   The Eagles program attended the 3 strongest tournaments in Ontario competing against the best and as a 15yr old Greg competed consistently.  His play, had many scouts follow him throughout the season and he did not disappoint as he only became a better player.  Greg was an integral part of the success we had in the Western Regional Championship.  His leadership and consistent play demonstrated his ability to play at a higher level someday.  Greg chose the Eagles Program versus the Thunder Bay Kings.  He was questioned for this decision as most 15 yr old kids from the North Shore have always gone west.  Greg was subsequently the first player drafted between both programs.  Greg has also been selected as one of the top 15yr olds in the region and will move on to the final three selection camps for Team Ontario under 17 program.  The Eagles are extremely proud and wish Greg all the best.

Terry Chitaroni

Eagles laugh last
By Carl Clutchey
Sunday, April 6, 2008 Chronicle Journal

Both clubs were hungry. Both eager not to be the only Northwestern Ontario squad to go home without at least one victory at the Telus Cup west regional final.
But in the end it was Marathon‘s Superior Eagles who came up smelling like roses in a hard-earned 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon over Thunder Bay Smith & Associates Kings at the Marathon arena.
Though the hard-hitting game was one of the more entertaining of the round robin with 28 shots apiece, it was really more about pride than points.
The lineup for today‘s final match between the Winnipeg Thrashers and Saskatchewan‘s Notre Dame Hounds had already been determined before the Eagles and Kings even laced up their skates.
Midget hockey fans got a taste of what that game might be like Saturday morning, when the Hounds embarrassed the Thrashers by an unexpectedly lopsided 5-1 margin.
(Remarkably, it was Winnipeg‘s first loss of the season in regulation, tournament or playoff play.)
So considering their match was academic, the Eagles and the Kings could have been forgiven for just going through the motions. But they did just the opposite.
The game started on a sour note for the home-town Eagles, when normally alert starting goalie Mike Trichilo let in a softie off the stick of Kings forward Culllen Merritt just five minutes into the first period.
At the other end, Kings netminder Colin Dzijacky was sharp with some great saves, including a life-saving, chest-high stop on the Eagles‘ Cam Gross during a breakaway at the start of the second period.
Then, with 11:39 left in the second, Jordan Carne put the Eagles on the board with a power-play goal.
The goal allowed the Eagles to take flight, with the reliable Trichilo saving their bacon every time the Kings moved in to bring them back down to earth.
For a few minutes at the half-way mark in the second, the Eagles made so many giveaways it seemed like they were intentionally setting up the Kings‘ forwards in the slot.
Another power-play marker half-way through the third put the Eagles in the lead after defenceman Gavin Weller beat Dzijacky cleanly with a sizzling line-drive from the blueline.
Momentum swung back and forth between the two evenly-matched clubs, both of whom had been shut down in games with the Hounds and the Thrashers.
Fans came to their feet with seven minutes left in the third when a speeding Eagles captain Ben Gamache swung in unscathed in front of Dzijacky and deftly put the red light on with a high backhand.
The goal capped a productive afternoon for Weller: he got the assist on Gamache‘s tally.
The Kings, who would record their third straight loss of the tournament and 10th straight overall since 2005, tried to pour it on after that.
But you could hear the hiss of the air leaking out of their tires when, with two minutes remaining in the third and Dzijacky already pulled, they took a slashing penalty.
The puck gets dropped in today‘s final between the Hounds and the Thrashers at 1 p.m.
The winner advances to the Telus Cup national event to be held April 21-27 in Arnprior near Ottawa.
